BOOK REVIEW: The Handmaid's Tale

One of my 2018 goals was to read 12 books this year and so far I'm right on track! I got The Handmaid's Tale for my birthday back in November and finally got around to reading it when I got back from the holidays.

The book is definitely different from the Hulu series, though still thought provoking in the same sort of way.

One thing I had to get used to (especially since I watched the show first and read the book second) is that the Hulu series was made to have multiple seasons. This affects how Offred acts, how Ofwarren acts, and so on. The show also added more layers to characters like Moira and Luke.

On the other hand, the book definitely goes into more detail about life in Gilead. What the stores are called, what happens to the children of the Commanders/Wives/Handmaids, what is used for moisturizer and so on.

Both the book and the Hulu series do a great job at avoiding specific time references, which is something that I loved about both of them. There are discussions of "before," but never any references to specific technology other than the occassional TV. I think this is one of the most thought provoking elements of The Handmaid's Tale. Is this happening now? (The book was written in the 1960's.) Is it still 50 years away? Is it set in the distant future, like in the year 2075? Love it.

If you liked the Hulu series, you would definitely like the book. If you're interested in women and gender in society, you would love both the book and the series.

Overall rating: 📚📚📚📚/📚📚📚📚📚

Have you read or seen The Handmaid's Tale? I just picked up "Never Let You Go" at the library to read next!
