2018 Goals

I always love the new year. Even though a majority of things remain the same, I feel like it's a chance to start fresh and make some real changes. It's so easy to say "I'll start on Monday" or "Next week I'll do it" but there's literally no better time to change your habits and set some goals than on the first day of a brand new year!

I always point to two years ago when I decided to start making my health a priority. I started walking more while at home, and then back at school I committed to getting 10,000 steps each day, bought the class workout pass... and now I exercise almost every day!

Looking back on how successful I was with that goal keeps me inspired to set new ones each year. (Last year I called them "Like To-Do's" to keep the pressure off, and I'm happy to report that I succeeded at each one!)

A lot of my goals this year are mind-based, and have to do with my mental attitude and self-care. Now that I've got the physical side down pat, I'm ready to focus more on the internal side too!

Do everything with intention // I've seen this on so many posts from different bloggers across different genres... and it keeps reminding me how important it is! I really want to take the time this year to ask myself "what's my intention" before making a decision. I'm also hoping this will allow me to be more present in situations.

Stop making excuses // Toward the end of 2017 I got in a really bad habit of making excuses - especially at the gym. I would always tell myself that I couldn't do something, or it was too much effort, or some other lame excuse that would stop me from putting 100% effort into something. I really hope to stop that in 2018!

Keep my apartment clean // I cleaned my apartment before going home for the holidays and coming back to it was so nice!! I want to keep it this clean for as long as possible, and if it gets messy again to clean it then and there instead of just living with it.

Read/Write more // I have a goal to read at least 12 books this year! I really want to get in the habit of reading before bed instead of watching Netflix. (Ditto at lunch!) I also have a goal of writing one in-depth piece each month on different subjects. I have no idea if those posts will be published here (or anywhere!) but I miss the "journalistic" aspect of writing sometimes.

Meet my savings goal each month // AKA stop eating out so much. This one is definitely a toughie! I've so far been successful, but I just upped my savings goal for the new year. I should be fine, but it's always nice to save more than you expect!

Support more local businesses // I live in a small town, but I still find myself going to Starbucks and Chickfila more than I should. It's so easy to just sick with the regular routine of chains instead of searching and maybe spending a little extra time finding the perfect local coffee shop or morning breakfast spot. I definitely want to change this in the new year!

Prioritize + Define future goals // It's really crazy to think that at the end of the year, I will hopefully be looking for my next step! Although that's a long way off, I'm still not sure what I want to do with my life and I definitely want to keep it at the front of my mind this year!

I got a new lens for my camera and a tripod for Christmas, so I'm also hoping to do more outfit posts and recipes this year!

What are your goals for 2018?

  2. Oh my gosh, girl, I love your goals! I resonate with so many of them! Specifically, I am working on a better work/life balance. I'm a counselor and it's so hard to turn work "off" when people are "needing" me all the time. But I know I need to indulge in more self-care.

I am also trying to eat out less, and save more money!! I'm also trying to read more instead of watch Netflix!!

  3. I love your goals! One of my goals this year is to express more gratitude, since I find myself complaining and making excuses all too often! Good luck on your goals this year!

  4. Great goals! I'm with you on making excuses when it comes to going to the gym. I always feel great after I do go though so I try to remind myself of the feeling I get when my workout is done and that helps!

    1. Definitely! And I'm always complaining about going to the gym but not feeling like I did anything... because of the excuses I make! It's a cycle I'm hoping to break :)

    1. Yes! I'm reading so many other posts about trying to read 24 books and I'm like, reading one a month is hard enough right now!

  8. I love all of these goals! I've been reading a chapter or two before bed instead of watching Netflix, and I really think it helps me sleep better because I spend so much time on the computer during the day. Cheers to 2018!

  9. Love these goals! One of mine is to stop using my phone while I watch TV (though I'm typing this while watch Netflix...whoops!) I also want to read more; I miss it and find myself watching too much TV which I hate.

  10. Intention is my word for the new year, so I definitely feel you on that one. I want 2018 to be the year where I start doing everything with intention. All of my actions need to better me and help me reach my goals in some way. Also, I know the struggle about not eating out so much. I fully plan to start cooking at home more often and stop going out to eat so often.

  12. I'm working on keeping my apartment clean, it's so hard! I'm trying to follow the KonMari method and I'm hoping that helps. Less stuff that I really like means easier to keep in it's place right? haha best of luck! Happy New Year!!

  13. I really need to stop making excuses too! It's something so small but it can really change your mindset and actually help you get stuff done!

  17. Honestly, making the effort to clean as you go has been an absolutely lifesaver for me! I made the change when I moved into my new apartment and it's been so great to always come home to a relatively clean room and not be stressed out by the mess. So keep at it, it's so worth it!
